Situated just behind the heart of the city's shopping district, Orchard Road, this half a decade old apartment was in a desperate need of a major overhaul. With its awkward hexagonal perimeter, low ceilings and unusual three split levels; the design idea was to create a series of balconies & cabinets to mask & regularise the alignment, raise the ceiling by exposing the beams strategically and integrate bench seatings into the steps to solve the respective problems. The balconies also serve filter the noise coming from the adjacent buildings & road, and allow for some greenery & semi-outdoor lounge settee. With a muted selection of tones & finishes, the result is a calming, almost Gallery-like space which serves as a respite from such an urban context.
