We were approached by a former client with a request to create a small-scale office for themselves, a retired couple. They wanted something separate from their home, where one or two staff could handle day-to-day affairs. The space needed to feel less like a typical office and more like a welcoming, home-like extension; professional, yet warm and relaxed. The main challenge was creating distinct work and staff areas in a compact open plan without sacrificing openness or warmth. A custom L-shaped bookcase near the entry defines the layout; open shelves display ceramics and sculptures, while lower cabinets hide storage. Behind it sits a discreet staff area with built-in pantry, filing, and print zones. The shelving acts as a visual screen, maintaining privacy without closing off the space. Deeper inside, a cozy lounge with built-in bench and full-height cabinetry serves as a casual meeting. Nearby, a large window-side desk offers a flexible spot for reading, working, or meetings. Timber cladding along the window wall hides extra storage and adds warmth. With a small footprint, we used a calm tactile palette and muted tones to create a calm, serene efficient office that feels comfortable, curated and quietly elegant.
